Western Michigan University has made several campus computer labs available to access remotely from your own computer anytime, anywhere. Follow the instructions below to learn how to connect to our computer labs remotely, as well as a list of software available on each remotely accessible lab.
How to connect to a remote lab machine
Step 1. Connect to the VPN
You must first connect to the WMU Virtual Private Network before you will be able to gain remote access to a lab computer. Use the instructions below to download and connect to the VPN on your device.

Step 2. Install Microsoft Remote Desktop
Microsoft Remote Desktop is the application you will use to remotely connect to a computer. Use the instructions below to download and install the application.
Microsoft Remote Desktop is included with Professional versions of Windows. If you are using a Home version of Windows, Microsoft Remote Desktop can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft Store.

Step 3. Connect to a lab computer
- Open our Remote Lab Dashboard using the button below:
Select an available computer - Click the Connect button next to the desired computer. A connect window will pop-up. Click the Download button.
- Open the file that was downloaded. You may be prompted with a security warning. Click Continue.
- A login box will appear:
Note: If you see a link titled more choices, click that and then Use a different account
- Username: Type wade\ followed by your BroncoNetID (For example, wade\abc1234)
- Password: Your Bronco NetID password
- Click OK or Continue.
- You will be prompted with another security warning. Click Yes or Continue.
- You will then be connected to the lab computer. Be sure to disconnect when your session is complete.
Need multiple monitor support?
If you would like to take advantage of your multi-monitor setup on your personal device when connecting to our remote labs, please use the following instructions:
- Click here to visit our Remote Lab Dashboard.
- Find a computer in the lab you would like to connect to. However, rather than click the Connect button, copy the full computer address from the center column. An example of a computer address is itlabs-bcc504.wade.wmich.edu.
- Open the Remote Desktop Connection application on your computer. Paste the computer address you copied in step 2 in the Computer field.
- Click Show Options, then click the Display tab
- Select Use all my monitors for the remote session.
- Click Connect. You may be prompted with a security warning. If so, click Continue.
- When asked for your credentials, click more choices, and then click Use a different account. (You will not need to click more choices on Mac)
- In the user name field, type wade\ followed by your BroncoNetID (For example, wade\abc1234), and then type your password in the next field and then click OK.
- You will be prompted with another security warning. Click Yes.
- Click here to visit our Remote Lab Dashboard.
- Find a computer in the lab you would like to connect to. However, rather than click the Connect button, copy the full computer address from the center column. An example of a computer address is itlabs-bcc504.wade.wmich.edu.
- Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop application on your computer. Click Connections in the menu bar and then PC Quick Connect.
- Paste the computer address you copied in step 2 in the PC name field.
- Click the Display tab and then select Use all my monitors.
- Click Connect. You may be prompted with a security warning. If so, click Continue.
- In the username field, type wade\ followed by your BroncoNetID (For example, wade\abc1234), and then type your password in the next field.
- You will be prompted with another security warning. Click Continue.
